Bluegrass Festival returns to Honey Creek

---- — Bluegrass Music Association of Iowa will be hosting the 4th Annual BMAI Honey Creek Resort Bluegrass Festival Oct. 24-26.

The event will be held in the Ball Room at Honey Creek Resort on Lake Rathbun near Moravia. Eight bands will perform during the weekend beginning with a gospel show on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Scheduled to perform are Missouri bands Sycamore Ridge and Lindley Creek, and Iowa band favorite The Bluegrass Blondie’s aka the Amos Family.

On Friday morning BMAI will be offering area school districts the opportunity to join them for a presentation on bluegrass music with a short documentary DVD “Fanning the Fire,” a mini concert with The Harper Family and Q&A session with workshops. The Harper Family was the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America Band competition winners in 2010 and are also featured in the Fanning the Fire DVD. Workshops will also be offered Friday afternoon for beginners to advanced musicians, as well as a free concert open to the public at 3:30 p.m.

The Friday evening show will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with an open stage for those wanting to showcase their group or artist abilities. Following will be performances by Missouri groups Highway 32 and The Harper Family, Iowa based band Bluegrass Addiction and national touring acts, Nu Blu from North Carolina and 2012 IBMA Emerging Artist of the Year Nominee Darrell Webb Band from east Tennessee. These bands will perform Saturday for two additional shows beginning at 1 p.m.

BMAI will also be offering a beginner jam session on Saturday morning from 10:30-11:30 a.m. with another viewing of Fanning the Fire at 11:30 a.m. to follow. The event will have raffle drawings, silent auctions and vendors to add to the excitement of the venue. Saturday BMAI will be presenting an Iowa youth with a banjo from the Play It Forward! program. Play It Forward! is an instrument lending library program for Iowa youths age 8-21 that are interested in learning to play a primary bluegrass instrument. Currently BMAI has 4 PIF participants.

Tickets for the show are: three-day VIP Premium seating $50; three-day General Admission $40; two-day VIP Premium seating $45; two-day General Admission $35; Thursday only $10; Friday only $20; Saturday all day only $25; Saturday evening only after 6 p.m. $20; Youth 7-16 are half-price, 6 and under are free.

During the festival the hotel will be offering special hotel and ticket packages for those attending. In addition, Honey Creek will offer hay rides, face painting, pumpkin carving and various other activities for the entire family. The accommodations include water park passes with your hotel room or cabin rental.
