Appanoose County residents are committed to saving one of the oldest churches in the county, Walnut City Christian Church, originated in 1858, an historic landmark.
Now, thanks to America's Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, farmers are given the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organization.
Tom and Mary Sue Zaputil were the winning farmers in Appanoose County. The Zaputil's will use the $2,500 to pay for siding renovations for Walnut City Christian Church.
"We chose to give the $2,500 donation to the Walnut City Church project because we are committed to seeing the restoration become a reality," Mary Sue said. "Once the church is restored, it will attract tourists and area families who wish to hold meetings, reunions, homecomings, weddings, retreats and other gatherings in the building."
John Arnold, Appanoose County Foundation president, said the goal of refurbishing the Walnut City Christian Church is proceeding steadily.
Grow Communities is part of a broad commitment by the Monsanto Fund to invest in farm communities such as Appanoose County. It aims to highlight the important contributions farmers such as Tom and Mary Sue Zaputil make every day to our society.
