As of 11:33 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2,679 absentee ballots had been cast in Appanoose County.
Appanoose County Auditor Linda Demry said that's about 500 more than her office has ever received for a General Election. She predicted the number of absentee ballots cast would increase before the election on Tuesday.
What most people don't realize, Demry said, is absentee ballots cost more to send out and process than if people waited to vote on election day.
Demry said postage for each absentee ballot is $1.30 and associated papers and envelope jack up the cost for each one to approximately $2.50.
Demry said she budgeted for a certain number of absentee ballots but not for more than 2,600.
"That was a little more excess than I anticipated," Demry said.
