Congressman Loebsack tours Rathbun Lake Watershed

The Daily Iowegian

---- — Of the many hats worn by John Sellers — including Rathbun Land and Water Alliance Board Member, conservation minded landowner, Wayne County Supervisor and Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner — he added tour guide to the list when Congressman Dave Loebsack and congressional aide, Dien Judge traveled to the area recently. Sellers led a tour around the Rathbun Lake Watershed to show the congressman the many conservation practices installed through the Alliance’s Protect Rathbun Lake Project.

Sellers told the congressman that conservation practices installed through the project have reduced sediment to Rathbun Lake by 40,000 tons per year.

“Around 550 landowners in the 354,000 acre watershed have worked with project staff to install more than one million feet of terraces and nearly 500 structures that reduce contaminants to the lake,” he said.

Congressman Loebsack was impressed.

“The Rathbun Land and Water Alliance is a shining example of how local, state and federal agencies can work hand in hand with private landowners to make a real difference,” he said. “This group is improving the water quality in Rathbun Lake and preserving our precious Iowa topsoil. I look forward to continuing to work with the Alliance to foster this cooperative and assist in any way I can.”
