---- — The Appanoose County Board of Supervisors Monday, Nov. 4 in the Courthouse boardroom approved the Secondary Road Construction Program amendment No. 2 as presented by county engineer Gary Bishop.

Bishop said the five-year program was amended to include two bridges. One is 1/4 of a mile north of the Captains Landing on Highway J5T.

Bishop said it’s not technically a bridge, but two, large 9 foot diameter culverts that were installed by the US Army Corps of Engineers 46 years ago that need to be replaced. He said the culverts that are big enough to be called a bridge have reached the end of their usefulness.

The board Monday awarded Calhoun-Burns and Associates of West Des Moines the contract to develop the preliminary design for the project. The design company will inspect the area and make a recommendation to the county on what would be the best way to go forward, Bishop said.

Bishop said he expects construction to begin late fall or winter of 2014, after the tourist season has ended.

The total cost of the project has yet to be determined, Bishop said.
