Nov. 9: 1895: Centerville’s Francis Marion Drake elected governor of Iowa. The town celebrates.
Nov. 9: 1943: People of Appanoose County get confirmation their boys in Company G under Col. Dewey Bear were among the troops fighting in Africa.
Nov. 10, 1938: Reports reach Centerville from Germany of Kristallnacht.
Nov. 11,1918: The news reached Centerville from Paris at 4 a.m. By 6 a.m the news was filtering from the Iowegian to the first employees arriving on the Square. Mayor Fox ordered a public holiday. Schools closed. Coalmines emptied. County offices shut. A parade started on the Square. Every few minutes it doubled in size. People arrived on trains and wagons for an evening of music, bands, speeches and cheering.
Nov. 12, 1944: The U.S. Navy begins bombing Iwo Jima. Appanoose County’s Mick Starcevic, Louis Cortesio and Floyd Fisher are in training for the landing.
