1881: Runners from the Western Union office at the Rock Island Station bring the news to the Square of the death of President Garfield who had been shot by assassin Charles Gitteau 80 agonizing days previously.(”Centerville: A Mid American Saga” P. 91/92)

1901: Three town memorials held for President McKinley and all trains stop across the country between 2:05 p.m. at the time of his funeral in Canton, Ohio. He had been shot by assassin Leon Czolgosz on Sept. 6, the news reaching the town by telephone to the Daily Citizen office (now the Ritz Theatre). (”Centerville: A Mid American Saga” P. 153-154)
