Two special trophies will be given out this Pancake Day to the best marching bands in the big parade to recognize the many years of instruction by John C. Holeman as the Centerville High School band director.
The plaque on the trophy reads, The John C. Holeman Prize, 65th Annual Pancake Day 2013, Best Parade Band.
A gold trophy will be awarded to the best high school entry and a silver trophy will be awarded to the best junior high band. The judging takes place during the parade on Saturday, Sept. 28. The trophies measure more than two feet tall and are topped with the image of a marching drum majorette.
The prizes were arranged by Frank Reznicek, a 1976 Centerville High School graduate and a Centerville High School band member for four years. Reznicek gathered donations from many former band members that had Mr. Holeman as their director.
“I know there were hundreds of kids that sat in that old band room with John on the podium,” said Reznicek. “I feel that with around 20 years of service it would be a nice idea to salute our former teacher with some sort of recognition.”
The trophies can be seen at the Centerville-Rathbun Lake Area Chamber of Commerce office located on the southwest corner of the Centerville Square.
