Nov. 22, 1945: Capt. David Whitamore, born and raised on Haynes Avenue, commands the C-47 aircraft that flies the Nazi war generals — Goering and Ribbentrop among them — to their ultimate trial at Nuremberg.
Nov. 23, 1903: Gov. Drake’s funeral is held at the Central Church of Christ on Drake Avenue. Special trains from Des Moines bring Gov. Cummins and members of state government, the president of Drake University with faculty, staff and students. Trains from Keokuk and Chicago bring railroad magnates, judges and waiters. There are relatives, town officials, children and those surviving members of the 36th Iowa regiment — now old, some blind but all carrying themselves with military bearing.
