A commercial cabinet making company in Centerville changed hands in January to a couple of youngsters in their 40s.
After 37 years building custom commercial cabinets, countertops and desks, Bill and Mary Moorman has sold Moorman Cabinets in Centerville to new owners, Mike and Carol Belloma, of Centerville. The Belloma's took charge Jan. 1 of this year and call their business Decor Cabinets, Inc.
Does Decor Cabinets, Inc. sound familiar? It should, as the Belloma's have run the residential cabinet making business for the past eight years in Centerville and for 12 years total.
"We started out in our garage," Mike said about Decor Cabinets.
Now they have a large factory and business office at 1222 S. 18th St. in Centerville with experience and contacts.
"They have the experience and they have the contacts and that is generally what we're buying is that whole entity in itself," Mike said.
Mike said they want to build the business and eventually phase in the residential cabinet making applications offered by Decor.
"We're going to try and grow it," Mike said. "Were getting busy and we plan on growing it. I plan on growing it to the point with having five employees out there on the floor working full-time and maybe a secretary in here of some sort."
Besides the goal of offering residential cabinets, Mike said they want to get to the point where they can work with walk in customers.
"Potentially, we want to get to that point where people can come in and we can lay out a kitchen for them and stuff of that nature," Mike said.
Mike is 47 and Carol is 42 and they have six children ranging in age from 19 to 7.
Mike and Carol are not strangers to the former owners, Bill and Mary Moorman. Bill and Mary are Carol's aunt and uncle.
"It's a new business for us and everything but it's not really a new business," Mike said. "It's something that is being carried on."
Mike's full-time job the last 23 years was at Vermeer in Pella where he was a design engineer.
Carol, who works at Mercy Medical Clinic in Centerville, plans to keep her day job and put in time at the business as needed.
Mary Moorman said she plans to retire. She said she will miss being around people, but plans to keep busy at their home in Mystic.
Husband Bill plans to stay on to do technical drafting and mentoring to help the Belloma's during the transition.
Moorman Cabinets makes European laminated custom commercial cabinets, countertops, desks, filing cabinets and other cabinet items for schools, hospitals, clinics and general contractors all over Iowa and in other states.
"And I plan to do the residential side in the same manner," Mike said. "We're going to be able to supply wood cabinets, desks and countertops."
