Off The Square Theatre Company seeks cast for 'Godspell'

Off The Square Theatre Company has announced audition times for their first show, “Godspell,” to be held at the renovated Majestic Theater in 2014. “Godspell” is the first of six shows planned for this year.

According to a press release, auditions will be held Monday, Jan. 13 and Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Majestic Theater. If needed, call backs will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15. The production is looking for 10 actors, singers and dancers who have some experience with dance or gymnastics and/or musical theater, although no experience is necessary to audition.

The production is seeking a diverse cast in both age and ethnicity and is looking for strong musicians and storytellers. The show is seeking a strong ensemble cast, as there is no true lead. Characters that need to be cast are Jesus and John the Baptist/Judas. There are also ensemble roles for three more men and five women. The ensemble is onstage 100 percent of the time and performs solos, lines, pantomimes, dances, monologues and dialogues during the show.

Potential cast members will be asked to sing a song in his or her range. The song can be from “Godspell,” or be a song in similar style, such as rock, folk or gospel. There will be cold readings from the script and group improvisations.

Performances are currently scheduled for March 14-16 and March 21-23 and rehearsals will be held at the Majestic Theater.

For anyone that is unfamiliar with the show, a version of the script is available at http://musicalplace.tripod.com/id541.htm. There are also many videos of various productions of the show on Youtube.

According to the press release, Godspell is from composer Stephen Schwartz of “Wicked,” “Pippin” and Disney’s “Pocahontas,” “Mulan” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” The musical is set as a series of parables based on the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and includes a variety of modern rock, folk and Gospel music.

The show opened off Broadway on May 17,1971 before moving to Broadway and to date has had more than 2,600 performances. “Godspell” has played in various touring companies, international venues and revivals, including one on Broadway in 2012.
