Jan. 31, 1940: Throughout the war, people donated blood at the district health office in the Courthouse and collected money for the millions of exhausted, frightened, hungry, homeless refugees streaming out of Dutch, Belgian and French cities. Starting from Centerville airport, there was a “Blitzkeig of Mercy.” Pilot Douglas Alexander, his aircraft complete with sirens mimicked the dreaded Nazi Stuka bomber, attacks and “dive bombed” every town in the county dropping not bombs but pamphlets requesting money for the Red Cross.
