Dec. 20, 1935: This was the first day of the terrible winter of 1936. On Dec. 20, the temperature was 3 degrees below zero. For the next 11 days of December (1935) and 50 days of 1936, the mercury remained at zero or sub-zero.
Dec. 21, 1935: In that terrible winter of 1936, it wasn’t just the temperatures. Snow piled on snow, blizzard followed blizzard with repeated lashing winds that lifted the snow into deep snow drifts and froze them so solidly vehicles could drive across the tops.
