Sequester will hit local public, private schools

CENTERVILLE — The mandatory federal government budget cuts known as sequestration that kicked in on March 1 will reduce local public schools' fiscal year 2014 budget.

Sequestration calls for cuts of $84 billion this year and $1.2 trillion over 10 years.

The estimated total budget cuts for all state public schools in four programs comes to $6,629,561.57, according to the Iowa Department of Education.

Centerville, Moulton-Udell, Seymour, Davis, Wayne, Albia and Moravia schools districts combined are expected to see $100,721.48 in estimated cuts due to sequester in four program areas: Title I, Title IIA, Title VI and IDEA Part B.

Centerville School District Superintendent Tony Ryan said funding will be impacted by 5 percent each year during sequestration.

• Centerville Community School District estimated reduction for the budget year that starts on July 1, 2013: Title I, $20,048.45; Title IIA, $4,668.77; Title VI, $444.93; and IDEA Part B, $3,742.95 for a total of $28,905.10.

• Moulton-Udell School District estimated reduction for the budget year that starts on July 1, 2013: Title I, $2,245.45; Title IIA, $739.55; Title VI, $65.98; and IDEA Part B, $552.18 for a total of $3,603.16.

• Albia Community School District estimated reduction for the budget year that starts on July 1, 2013: Title I, $10,340.15; Title IIA, $2,935.98; Title VI, $376.68; and IDEA Part B, $3,186.35 for a total of $16,839.15.

• Davis County Community School District estimated reduction for the budget year that starts on July 1, 2013: Title I, $20,428.55; Title IIA, $3,893.68; Title VI, $388.38; and IDEA Part B, $3,131.15 for a total of $27,841.75.

• Moravia Community School District estimated reduction for the budget year that starts on July 1, 2013: Title I, $3,417.05; Title IIA, $843.86; Title VI, $118.95; and IDEA Part B, $957.05 for a total of $5,336.91.

• Seymour Community School District estimated reduction for the budget year that starts on July 1, 2013: Title I, $5,581.10; Title IIA, $1,493.34; Title VI, $71.83; and IDEA Part B, $672.65 for a total of $7,818.92.

• Wayne Community School District estimated reduction for the budget year that starts on July 1, 2013: Title I, $7,054. 90; Title IIA, $1,625. 27; Title VI, $173.23; and IDEA Part B, $1,513.10 for a total of $10,366.49.

Sequester also affects Indian Hills Community College based in Ottumwa with a campus in Centerville.

The college has an estimated ABE of $187,918.55 on July 1, 2013. The estimated reduction due to sequester is $9,890.45.
