Queen for a (Pancake) Day in Centerville

Daily Iowegian

CENTERVILLE — The Pancake Day Queen Contest has been around since the very first year of pancakes. The call for young ladies to come and participate in the event brings in girls from all around southern Iowa and northern Missouri.

Beginning in August each year, several young ladies who wish to become the next Pancake Day Queen begin practicing in earnest. The competitions have remained much the same, although the swimwear competition has evolved into a swimwear/sportswear competition where the girls may choose which type of outfit they prefer. They are also judged on an evening gown competition and an interview. In earlier years, they were also judged on their appearance in the parade.

Once crowned, the Pancake Day Queen has the option to go on to compete in the Miss Iowa pageant and represent Appanoose County at the state level.

The Pancake Day Queen serves the community at different events in the area including Chamber of Commerce events and promotional events at area businesses and they take time to read to children at area schools.

The Pancake Day Queen contest remains one of the most popular events of the day, and will always be an integral part of Pancake Day.
