Arraignment set for two teens accused of ‘crime spree’

By Michael Schaffer - Managing editor

The two teens law enforcement officials said are behind a "crime spree" will be arraigned on 16 criminal charges at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 6 in the Wayne County Courthouse in Corydon.

Kevin Donald Allen, 19, of Seymour and Gabriel Dee McQueen, 18, of Chariton have each been accused by Wayne County Attorney Alan M. Wilson of eight criminal counts. The county attorney alleges in trial information he filed Sept. 1 that Allen and McQueen both participated in six counts of third degree burglary and one count each of second degree criminal mischief and second degree theft, all class D felonies.

Class D felonies are punishable by up to five years in prison and at least a $750 but no more than a $7,500 fine.

Wilson's accusations paint a picture where the two defendants allegedly participated in ongoing criminal conduct that stretched from July 20 to Aug. 20 of this year and included at least five separate victims in three different communities in Wayne County. The majority of the charges allege they entered occupied structures with the intent to commit a theft. And one charge alleges they possessed stolen property in excess of $1,000 and another charge accuses them of intentionally damaging mail boxes, corn fields and road signs valued in excess of $1,000.

Both men waived their Aug. 20 preliminary hearing. On Sept. 1 Allen was given pre-trial release to the custody of the supervision of the Fifth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services while McQueen was released to a family member.
