The movie “Crash” will be featured at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Majestic Theatre in Centerville. The special presentation looks at how Americans address racism in the United States.
The film is sponsored by First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Centerville, and although the film is rated R because it addresses some hard issues, Pastor Kathy Franzenburg encourages everyone in the community to attend.
"‘Crash’ looks not only at the issue of racism, but also how we, as Americans, have distanced ourselves from each other because of any number of differences," said Franzenburg, "We hope people will come together and see the film and be inspired to address these issues here in our own community."
The 2004 film garnered three Oscars for its thought-provoking theme, which was based on a true story involving the film's director, Paul Haggis, whose Porsche was carjacked outside a video store in Los Angeles in 1991.
Following the film, the audience will be invited to remain for a discussion facilitated by Franzenburg and Indian Hills Community College Professor, Bruce Dickerson. Dickerson instructs a number of issue-driven classes including Religion and Human Culture, and the Nature of Conflict, which addresses the history of civil rights.
"This is a very powerful film," he said. "In just the first 10 minutes, we see how incredibly important it is that we try to deal with our differences in a more civilized manner than we do now."
Dickerson said while many Iowans in rural communities haven't experienced many of the issues in the same way they are addressed in the film, it will get people thinking about how they face similar issues on a personal level.
Admission is free and the Majestic will be serving complimentary popcorn and drinks.
