Outdoor activities dominate during July

A long list of summertime activities and Honey Creek Resort were the focus of the first Wednesday of the month meeting known as Kaffee Klatch, which was sponsored by Faith United Methodist Church.
Centerville-Rathbun Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Joyce Bieber said requests for brochures have increased and she told of several events on the July calendar.
The Children's Art Festival will be held Saturday, July 11 on the courthouse lawn. The same weekend, Appanoose County train rides will depart from the Wabash Depot Museum in Moravia for a 70-minute excursion to Albia and back.
The train rides draw people from all over Iowa, Bieber said, and they usually sell out. She recommended anyone interested in going should make a reservation no later than Wednesday of next week.
The Red Rock Threshers plan to converge on Honey Creek Resort from July 16-18. They plan to take a 200 strong tractor ride on Friday, July 17 on Highway 2 from Moulton and they are expected to be on the Centerville square that afternoon.
Rounding out her list of activities was the July 31 Friday Night Live featuring the music of Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts and Summer Splash at Honey Creek Resort Saturday, Aug. 1.
"Just another beautiful month for the Chamber," she said.
Cora Whitney, Honey Creek Resort assistant sales manager, said the resort was very busy and the cabins have proven to be very popular.
"Our cabins are always close to being sold out everyday of the week," she said.
Representing Appanoose County was Supervisor Dean Kaster, who introduced the director of Veteran's Affairs, Lisa Owens, now on the job one year replacing Wallace "Mo" Carter.
Owens said they have a van that can take veterans to the hospital in Des Moines or Knoxville and they will make house calls.
"That's what we do, leg work. Anything to help the veterans," she said.
The first Wednesday in August Kaffee Klatch will be sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will be held at Rathbun Lake.
