CENTERVILLE – At Tuesday’s Centerville School Board meeting, Superintendent Rich Turner announced that St. Mary’s Church has agreed to a lease agreement with the district for use of its school building. The contract is for July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009 with the charge estimated at between $7,500 to $11,000 per year. Turner said the district would be responsible for custodial services in the building.
“The building will then be subleased to the private providers of the 4 year old preschool, a 3 year old preschool and a before and after school private program provider,” Turner said. “And we would also recommend that the district’s preschool handicap program be moved from the Kids World building to this site. This would save the district the rent that is currently being paid for the use of the facility.”
The board approved the agreement.
A budget amendment hearing was held before the regular meeting. Some of the Howar gym expenses were delayed from the previous year into the 2008 budget year and projections were too low. “Total Other Expenditures” changed from $2,273,659 to $2,420,000.
At the start of the regular meeting, there were several presentations from visitors. Lisa Bachman, tobacco prevention specialist with SIEDA Substance Abuse Service, presented the board with a certificate for its efforts in making the high school campus tobacco free.
Sharon Burch, elementary music teacher, gave a presentation with some of her students on techniques she uses to teach vocal music. Using hand signals to represent notes, she led the students in a performance for the board.
Diane Mueller was present to discuss the Professional Development Committee, which determines how to spend the allotted money sent from the state to provide professional development for certified staff. Mueller said the committee wants the best training possible. “Something teachers will use in their work, making the training relative to what they teach,” she said.
Elementary Principal Scott Clark discussed math curriculum modifications and math textbook with the board. Clark is also the district’s elementary school improvement coordinator.
The board approved contracts for Matt Kruzich as varsity boys’ basketball coach for the 2008-09 school year, Deb Frisk as secretary at Lincoln School replacing Loretta Kauzlarich, Elizabeth Gaskins as the vocational agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor replacing Dianne Fuller, and Ron Thomas, Phil Beeler, Kelly Kauzlarich and Kim Mitchell, as drivers education instructors.
Turner announced that because the district will receive additional money from the state-wide sales tax that was passed in the legislature, new lighting will be possible for the Howar gym. The estimated cost is $16,500 and he said he wanted the board to know they were seeking bids on the project.
Turner announced that, through a grant, Centerville High School, Howar Jr. High and Lakeview will all have a defibrillator available on campus when school starts next year. There will be training for staff.
