Published May 13, 2008 06:06 pm - The auditor is requesting eligible voters make every attempt to register by mail or in person prior to Saturday, May 24.

Appanoose County voter registration

Appanoose County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, Linda Demry, is asking that eligible voters in Appanoose County who have not yet registered to vote consider doing so before election day on June 3.

The auditor is requesting eligible voters make every attempt to register by mail or in person at the auditor’s office prior to the close of pre-registration at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 24. That will assure time for the auditor’s office to complete the voter registration process and mail a voter registration card to each registrant. The voter registration card will indicate the location of the correct precinct.

In January 2008, Iowa law was adopted to allow eligible persons the right to register to vote and cast a ballot on election day if they are able to provide proof of identity and proof of residency at the polls.

The best form of ID is a valid Iowa driver’s license with current address. If your license has an old address on it, you can use the license as proof of identity and use one of the following as proof of residency if it contains a name and current address: residential lease, property tax statement, utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other governmental documents.

If you do not have an Iowa driver’s license, you can provide another ID as long as it contains a photo and is current, valid, and contains and expiration date.

If you do not have proof of identity and residency, a registered voter in your precinct may attest to the fact of your identity and residency. Both parties will be required to sign an oath.

In the event that none of the above is possible, a person will be allowed to vote a provisional ballot at the polling site and provide the necessary documentation to the auditor’s office no later than noon on Monday, June 9. If the documentation is not received by the deadline the ballot will not be counted.

Persons that are already registered to vote do not need to re-register to participate in the election.

Person’s with questions regarding voter registration, absentee voting, or the June 3 primary election may contact the auditor’s office at 856-6191. The auditor’s office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will be open Saturday, May 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for voter registration and absentee voting.
