America is ‘the greatest nation in the world’

CENTERVILLE — Dear Editor,

We in America live in the greatest nation in the world and have so much for which to be thankful. If ever there was a nation with blessings and prosperity, it is America, but it seems some people are still promoting socialism, the big lie of the last century. There are some, who instead of giving thanks to God, are putting their trust in created things and want to eliminate any trust in or thanksgiving to God.

Some years ago, Lech Walesa, president of Poland at that time said, "Americans are drifting away from spiritual values as they become richer. Sooner or later they will have to go back to their fundamental values, back to God, the truth which is God."

It seems some Americans are loosing their religious and moral bearings. There is evidence of spiritual decline and moral decadence that is subtly becoming part of our society. Some things once thought immoral have been accepted, then endorsed, and finally promoted. But with all its flaws, America remains a unique achievement for human dignity on a scale unequaled anywhere in the world.

Why has America been blessed like no other nation on earth?

The seeds of freedom were planted when our Founding Fathers dedicated this new nation to God. He has showered His blessings on this nation which has catapulted it from a dependent colony to a position of worldwide leadership in less than 200 years. America's blessings point back to her foundation and the providential hand of God. The wonder of the land is presented in Kathryn Lee Bates patriotic song "America the Beautiful."

The rich natural resources and America's free enterprise system have contributed to her economic superiority. And America is the most productive efficient industrial nation in the world.

We must get back to our roots, back to our foundation. Some Americans have lost their way because they do not know their own Christian heritage. America's blessings call forth from all who benefit from them thanksgiving. We must give thanks to God especially at this Thanksgiving season. America did not just happen. It unfolded by divine design. We are truly fortunate to live in the land of the free and home of the brave. May God continue to bless America.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
