Vote your convictions Nov. 8

CENTERVILLE — Dear Editor,

America is the greatest nation in the world and we have so much for which to be thankful. God has showered upon America over 200 years of blessings. From colonial days to the present hour, the USA has seen the mighty works of God in her midst and known the truth that comes from heaven. We've seen many signs of God's blessings on our beautiful bountiful land. We look back on a tremendous heritage of political freedom founded on Biblical faith.

But recent years have seen a different outlook. The Obama administration is promoting an anti-God agenda and many Americans have been educated to dependence on government rather than liberty and brainwashed to believe it is government's responsibility to take resources from some and give them to others. It seems our nation is deteriorating from within.

But more and more Americans are starting to realize we are headed in the wrong direction. America does not need draconian government planning which President Obama has iniated. Much of his planning has led further toward a socialist system with government in charge to replace the constitutional free enterprise system envisioned by our founding Fathers which has made America the greatest country in the world.

Friedrich A. Hayek, a German economist, wrote a book a few years ago entitled, "The Road to Serfdom," with reference to the Nazi regime in Germany under Hitler. The central point of that book is that it is impossible to have both central planning and individual freedom. We see that playing out today in our country.

We are approaching the most important election in at least a half century when we will exercise our freedom and our obligation to vote. In politics, we must fight for the candidate who comes closest to the ideals we hold, while recognizing that we may not agree with everyone on every issue. We must vote our convictions on Nov. 6. We must vote to steer America back to the historic roots of our founding Fathers so America can regain the moral high ground and avoid economic disaster.

We want to see the eagle fly high again in the land of the free and home of the brave.

Yours truly,

Lawrence Powell

Udell

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"

B. I do not support the ordinance
C. Not sure
