Religious freedom under attack

The Daily Iowegian

---- — Attack on religious freedom

Dear Editor,

Most of us in the United States of America believe we live in the greatest nation in the world and we have so much for which to be thankful.

But recently we’ve seen religious freedom under attack in our armed forces as there are efforts to trample liberty in the military — the very entity that has fought to protect constitutional freedom for more than two centuries.

Rep. John Fleming (R-La) has proposed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act which aims to protect the freedom of speech and action by service personnel which reflects their conscience, moral principles and religious beliefs.

But the Obama administration issued a statement that it “strongly objects” to that amendment. Retired Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin said “the administration has a deliberate plan to reduce the impact Christianity has on our military service.” This spring the Department of Defense released several threatening and confusing statements regarding the rights of religious expression in the military, including a warning of court-martial for sharing one’s faith.

We Christians in America must take a stand for our religious freedom. We must pray for our nation as we see alternative voices being lifted — the voice of atheism, the voice of humanism and the voice of pragmatism.

Much appreciation is extended to those who planned and participated in the “Cry Out America!” prayer service at the Courthouse Flag pole on Wednesday, Sept. 11. We must guard the open door of religious freedom in our blessed land. We must continue to pray for America.

And thanks to the Centerville Fire Department for their display of the STARS and STRIPES over Highway 2 by the fire station. What a grand addition to the events of the day.

Yours truly,

Lawrence Powell
