Great conflict for the soul of the United States

CENTERVILLE — Dear Editor,

When America was founded as the American Constitutional Republic, Christianity brought to America's citizens undreamed of political freedoms and such innumerable personal blessings that historians declared our Declaration of Independence and our Constitutional Republic to be a "miracle." General George Washington wrote in 1778 about God's unmistakable and marvelous intervention on "behalf of American causes. The hand of Providence has been so conspicuous in all the colonies' victories in the American War of Independence that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith ... to acknowledge his obligation."

Our Founding Fathers were overwhelmingly committed Christians. They were clergymen, statesmen, educaters. lawyers, physicians, farmers and highly skilled successful businessmen who committed their "lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor" to the cause of freedom. They gave us the world's greatest political success formula. In a little over 100 years that formula allowed a small segment of the human family — less than 6 percent — to become the richest industrial nation on earth with the highest standard of living in the world and producing more than one-half of the world's total production. People here were generous and shared much of their wealth with other nations. Volumes were written about America's countless blessings with freedom of worship and liberty. America's Christian citizens beginning with the Pilgrims in 1620 made God's Word the center of their personal and political lives. The Bible was taught to their children who learned its great moral principles.

But some things have been happening in America in later years which would have been unheard of in the early days of America.

In 1962 the Supreme Court ruled "unconstitutional a strictly voluntary nondenominational prayer composed by the New York Board of Regents. On June 17, 1963, a justice ruled "it is unconstitutional for a state to have portions of the Bible recited in schools." In 1980, even though the Ten Commandments have served since America's inception as the foundation for our God given freedoms, the Supreme Court declared "It is unconstitutional for the Ten Commandments to hang on the walls of a classroom since the students might be lead to read them, meditate upon them, respect them and obey them." Then in 1990, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled, "It is unconstitutional for a classroom library to contain books which deal with Christianity, or for a teacher to be seen with a personal copy of the Bible at school." My question is, How can reasonable intelligent people in the U. S. judicial system arrive at such conclusions?

Besides these things happening in our schools, we see abortion mills killing innocent babies by the millions, homosexuality, which is called abomination in the Bible has free reign, our nation's highest court has ruled sodomy is a right although it was a criminal offense forbidden by the laws of the 13 original states, and our government is disarming our military defenses in an increasingly dangerous world and America's Biblical morality seems to be collapsing.

We are involved in a great conflict for the soul of this nation.

II Chron. 7:14, "If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

Yours truly,
