Centerville woman defends Golden Age

Daily Iowegian

CENTERVILLE — Dear Editor,

Appanoose County is fortunate to have several pleasant and adequate places for the care of loved ones that cannot care for themselves. No place is perfect and under strict state and federal requirements all places of this nature have violations.

Unfortunately, the recent articles in the Iowegian went far back in dates (further than other facilities in the chart) with no admission or stated investigation of what has happened since. A person needs to be aware of the levels of citations. Of the 17 violations that were given in the articles, two were in 2008, 10 in 2009. Two of these were in the blue category which means there was the least potential for minimal harm, according to the state web site. The remainder of the afore mentioned were in the yellow category which is potential minimal harm.

In 2010 one violation (pressure sores) occurred that was deemed in the red category. That violation is no longer an issue.

Another one of our homes received red in the same violation in 2011. I'm sure that has been fixed. Five violations existed in 2011. All were in the minimal of the yellow category.

Regarding the drastic event of 2012, those in immediate fault have been replaced.  All managerial staff is now held with experienced, reliable people (administrator, director of nursing, social service coordinator).

After such an event as was covered, the state as well as the federal examiners come in and reinvestigate the violations. Golden Age is now deficiency free as of October 2012 and they have aggressively moved forward.

The coverage in the past few weeks has left families very hurt and offended for it reflects on their wisdom in placing their loved ones there. I spoke with client's families as well as several advocates. Very few complaints were found and all feel that Golden Age is very adequate in physical care and also a place with loving, personal care as a family. Many would highly recommend the facility to others.
