Celebrate the birthday of the United States

Dear Editor,

This week on July 4th, we Americans will celebrate the birthday of the United States of America – the anniversary of the day on which the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress – July 4, 1776. This is the occasion that John Adams said will be celebrated as the great anniversary festival by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty and by parades, sports and illuminations.

I am certainly proud to be an American and so thankful for the many blessings we enjoy as citizens of this great nation. Many of these blessings are taken for granted by some including our freedom of religion. We know many people in the world do not have these blessings and opportunities.

George Washington said in 1776, “It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible.”

It seems in recent times that many either ignore God or are openly hostile to Him. But families, institutions and whole cultures crumble when they ignore God. Many of our current social problems are rooted in a choice to ignore God.

It seems to me as we celebrate Independence Day this July 4, we should remember our roots and acknowledge our dependence on God and we should give due respect and honor to Him.

Wishing everyone a joyous July 4 and may God continue to bless America.

Lawrence Powell
