The Centerville FFA Chapter held its annual awards banquet on May 8 at Lakeview cafeteria. President Bridgette Richmond called the room to order with 90 members and guests present. Following the opening ceremonies and a welcome those present enjoyed a potluck meal and time to visit.
As the room came back to order after the meal, the chapter began presenting and recognizing a number of individuals for their successes and support during the past year. Members received certificates and pins for the following contests: Chapter Quiz: Bridgette Richmond, Hilary Morris, Amanda McGill and Samantha Summers-gold at sub-district and at district
Manual Quiz: Chelsea Baker, Nathan Berry, Shaniel Smith, Heidi Gottman received a gold at sub-district and at district.
State Greenhand Quiz: Nathan Berry gold and Shaniel Smith third place gold. This is the best the Greenhands have ever done in this contest.
FFA Creed-Shaniel, gold at sub-alternate to district Chapter Scrapbook-Kelsey Shanahan and Chelsea Garretson, participation at district.
The following members were then recognized for the development of their supervised agricultural experience programs: Agriculture Communications - Kelsey Shanahan and Chelsea Garretson, Agriculture Education- Jessica Acheson and Lance Stull.
Agriculture Processing-Placement Samantha Summers, Agriculture Sales- Placement Dany Clark, Agriculture Services- Placement Andrew Bankson and Justin Schoolcraft
Beef Production-Entrepreneurship – Brian Sulser, Beef Production-Placement – Hilary Morris, Equine Science-Entrepreneurship – Brittany Sinclair, Outdoor Recreation- Bridgette Richmond, Specialty Animal Production – Entrepreneurship Kylee Martin.
The next groups of student/members were recognized for skill development which is taught as a unit in class and further developed outside the classroom throughout FFA participation: Parliamentary Procedure is taught and demonstrated both in class and at the FFA meetings throughout the year. Second year members do a unit and then may work in addition to compete in the contest area for parly. procedure. Receiving certificates are:

Leadership Development is a key to the FFA’s mission and there are a number of students who worked as part of the executive committee and/or on leadership areas throughout the year. These students are: Bridgette Richmond, Hilary Morris, Samantha Summers, Kylee Martin, Kelsey Shanahan, Brittany Sinclair, Brooke Bige, Brian Sulser, Dany Clark and Chelsea Garretson
Sales skills along with planning a sales campaign is another area the agriculture education program and FFA work on.
This year members were responsible for the calendar advertising campaign. They have done well and for this Justin Schoolcraft, Taisha Naill, Andrew Bankson, and Hilary Morris were recognized.

The chapter then recognized a number of individuals that helped during the year as drivers, chaperones, and workers for activities and support when needed for various activities. Those recognized were: Theresa Summers, Rita Susin, Jill Zintz, Bob Morris, Shawn Tait, Melinda Gottman, Michele Burge, Sandy Conn, Nancy Hoffman, Myra McGill, Stephanie Garretson, Mary Buban, Randy and Mona Berry, Larry Johnson
Honorary Chapter FFA membership was bestowed on Theresa and Doug Summers, Karen and Rodney Richmond and Bill Messerole.
The Summers’ and Richmonds’ daughters have been active members for the past several years and as parents they have provided support and help in conducting activities as needed.
Messerole has been very supportive of the agriculture education program along with the FFA Chapter while he has been at Centerville Schools.
A slide show put together by president Richmond was shown reviewing the past year and recognizing Mrs. Fuller’s service as advisor the last 25 years. Members gave Fuller several parting recognitions during the course of the evening as she is leaving after 25 years at Centerville Schools.
The leadership award presented to the executive committee member as voted by the committee was jointly awarded to Richmond and Morris this year.
Star Greenhand went to Shaniel Smith, daughter of Shawn Tait and Dan Smith.
Star Chapter FFA went to Richmond and Star Chapter Agribusiness went to Samantha Summers.
The last three awards are based on academics, participation and SAE programs during the years members are involved in the program.
The Centerville FFA Chapter was chartered in 1936 and currently has 59 members.

Shaniel Smith and Nathan Berry were recognized for finishing third and 17 at the State Greenhand Quiz from among 251 taking the quiz. Smith also received the Star Greenhand Award.
