CENTERVILLE — Laura DePrizio was recently honored at the annual Fall Leadership Conference hosted by the Iowa Association of Student Councils in Des Moines Oct. 29.  DePrizio accepted the award in front of more than 1,200 students.

Each year, the association honors an Iowa advisor whom they feel has made "many positive contributions as a student council advisor and one who cares about our state's youth."   As Iowa's advisor of the year, DePrizio's name and application will be submitted to the regional selection committee for Region V Advisor of the Year as well as the national Warren E. Shull Advisor of the Year award.  The national winner will be named at the national conference in Las Vegas in June, 2013. In 2006, Centerville's own Susan McDanel was named the national winner.

In a congratulation letter to DePrizio, the state executive director of the association had the following to say: "Your work throughout your years of service is appreciated, not only by your fellow teachers and advisors, but also by the many students whose lives have been guided and improved by your efforts. Let me offer you my personal congratulations on receiving this fine and well deserved honor."

In a speech given by Catherine Lechtenberg, board member and fellow Centerville advisor, DePrizio was praised for her ability to take a run of the mill project and turn it up five notches and for her dedication to the CHS student council.  In her years as advisor, DePrizio helped the student raise more than $30,000 for Operation Santa alone.  She was also instrumental in the success of Coaches VS. Cancer along with her assistant, Jesseca DeVore, the fundraiser the basketball team sponsored in conjunction with the student council raised $5,000 for cancer research.  She has also led the students through many blood drives resulting in donations of more than 400 units of blood. According to Lechtenberg, she also has the uncanny ability to talk administration into almost anything the students want to do.

DePrizio is married to Centerville High School band director Jim DePrizio. They have two children, Gabriella and Michael. She was the advisor at Centerville High School for eight years. DePrizio now teaches at Moravia High School.
