DES MOINES — Iowa parents and guardians have until March 1 to file applications to open enroll their children for the upcoming school year into a school district other than the one in which they live.
The March 1 deadline, which is required by state law, applies to students in first through 12th grades. The open enrollment deadline for students entering kindergarten is Sept. 1. Open enrollment is not required for 4-year-old children who are enrolling in the statewide voluntary preschool program.
Open enrollment applications must be sent to the school district where the student lives and to the school district where the student wants to transfer. Application forms for the 2014-15 school year can be found in the administrative offices of Iowa school districts or on the Iowa Department of Education’s website: www.educateiowa.gov/pk-12/options-educational-choice/open-enrollment.
Open enrollment applications filed after the March 1 deadline can be approved under a number of “good-cause” exemptions, including a change in marital status of parents, placement in foster care, adoption, and pervasive harassment.
