Board approve school boiler projects

---- — The Board of Education of the Centerville Community School District held a public hearing and special board meeting March 20 at 6 p.m. in the board room of the Administration Office in Centerville. The purpose of the meeting was to review plans for high school and junior high boiler project.

The board voted unanimously to approve the plans for the high school and junior high boiler project. The cost of replacing the boilers was estimated at $500,000 to $550,000 for both buildings.

Tyler Luttenegger, representative from MODUS Engineering, reviewed the plans for the high school and junior high boiler project.

He recommended the two, 1958 hot water boilers be replaced with two smaller sized boilers and replace the piping around the boilers at the junior high and at the high school the two steam boilers should be replaced with two steam boilers with the exception of the electrical work that will be completed in the electrical room.

Mike Zintz, director of buildings and grounds/transportation, stated there is asbestos in the insulation around the piping at the high school and junior high. Also at the high school there is asbestos around the exhaust to the walls.

Ames Environmental comes every three years to re-inspect the asbestos in the buildings. The boiler insulation tests came back negative for asbestos.

Ames Environmental gave Zintz resources to have the asbestos abated. Two of those contractors have given quotes on the abatement process: High school $18,000 and junior high $7,000. If there was a full abatement to remove all asbestos at the high school boiler room, the area would have to be enclosed so it has its own pressurized environment for air control.

Also there are some additional water lines at the high school not tied to the boilers, Zintz said.

Luttenegger stated an option would be to re-insulate the piping. An estimated cost could be $18,000 for full replacement of the insulation.
