OTTUMWA — RELCO Locomotives, Inc., a Chicago-based company with manufacturing facilities in Albia, has partnered with Indian Hills Community College to attempt to meet the training needs in the locomotive mechanics industry.

RELCO and IHCC found a need in the marketplace for training opportunities within an industry that has been successful despite the recent economy. By providing the necessary equipment and education to help students acquire certain skills, the partnership should strengthen the industry and provide employment opportunities throughout the region.

Graduates will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree from IHCC and will be prepared to work in a number of diesel and power equipment areas in the locomotive industry and at service and repair facilities.

The program is designed to allow students to become proficient at diagnosing, repairing and maintaining locomotive diesel engines and components. They will also study diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, drivelines, power dividers, brakes and air conditioning.

RELCO offers services in complete locomotive rebuilding and manufacturing.  The company specializes in everything from partial reconditioning to complete out-of-frame remanufacturing, including the latest aftermarket upgrades.

Diesel Power Technology is one of nearly 50 technical programs offered at Indian Hills.
