Special assessments?

By Michael Schaffer Managing Editor
The Daily Iowegian

---- — The Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about how the city helps pay for street paving projects, like the one coming up — East and West State streets and North 10th Street.

Typically, the city adds a special assessment to the property in the street paving project area. But that assessment hasn’t been uniform. Consider: Property in the Drake Avenue street paving project area were assessed 25 percent while property in the East and West State streets and North 10th Street project area, for now, are being assessed 10 percent.

So, the question of the week is, “Should Centerville develop a policy that sets a permanent special assessment amount or should the amount of special assessment be determined by project circumstances?”

Go to the Daily Iowegian website, www.dailyiowegian.com, and scroll down the home page to POLL on the right hand side and cast your vote. Or call the Iowegian office at (641) 856-6336 or email the editor at iowegianeditor@mchsi.com to cast a vote.

Vote on the Question of the Week up until Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 12 p.m. The results will be published in the Thursday, Jan. 16 paper along with a new question.

Here are the results from the last poll question: “Do you plan to spend more, the same or less than you did last year for Christmas gift giving? Or nothing at all?

A. Spend more received 13 votes.

B. Spend the same received 40 votes.

C. Spend less received 38 votes.

D. Nothing received 15 votes.
