Workshop on memory loss set

The Pella Chronicle

PELLA — Trinity Reformed Church in Pella is planning a free, in-depth session on Oct. 1 focused on Alzheimer's disease.

An American develops Alzheimer’s disease every 68 seconds and by 2050, an American will develop the disease every 33 seconds, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. The dramatic rise in this disease means increasing numbers of adult children are facing the challenge of how to best meet the needs of their aging parents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

To educate adult children about memory loss and how they can help their relatives receive the memory support they need, an in-depth workshop titled “Living and Thriving with Memory Loss” will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 1, by Hearthstone, a Ministry of WesleyLife. The workshop, which is free and open to the public, will start at 5 p.m. in the Trinity Reformed Church Connection Center, 407 Franklin St. in Pella.

During the workshop, the following experts will share valuable tips and guidance:

-Nancy Van Wyk, an RN and Certified Dementia Specialist at Hearthstone, will educate attendees about dementia and share a list of the top 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

-Gina Jansen, a Licensed Independent Social Worker who owns and operates Foundations Christian Counseling, will provide tips on how to handle role reversals as children become caregivers for their parents with an emphasis on how to maintain that relationship. Jansen, who holds a master’s degree in social work, also will provide tips for handling emotional situations.

As a thank you for attending the workshop, each attendee will receive a “Dinner to Go” that serves four to enjoy at home, courtesy of the Hearthstone culinary staff.

Individuals interested in the workshop are encouraged to register soon because space is limited. To sign up, call 628-8809 or visit wesleylife.org/rsvp.
