Slight risk of severe weather Thursday

DES MOINES — Southeast Iowa might be forgiven for not quite remembering what this is like, but there's a slight risk of severe weather on Thursday.

The Storm Prediction Center places much of eastern Iowa in a slight risk band that reaches from the Great Lakes to the Kansas City area. The risk isn't tornadoes, though those can never be entirely ruled out if severe storms form. Forecasters believe strong winds aloft will limit that, with the most likely threats isolated strong winds and large hail.

Strong storms will be possible in west-central Iowa during the afternoon. The threat shifts to this area in the evening.

The storms are associated with a cold front that is expected to pass through the region Thursday. The front will be enough to drop daytime highs from near 90 on Thursday to the mid-70s Friday.

The weekend looks good for outdoor activities, with clear skies and highs in the 70s.
