Fire risk extremely high Wednesday

OTTUMWA — A red flag warning is in effect for the entire area as observers warn of an extreme risk of fires in Iowa.

The National Weather Service says this afternoon and evening are the most dangerous times in the forecast, as southwest winds of 20-30 mph will blow over the region. Humidity is low, exacerbating the risk.

Grasses in Iowa remain dry from a combination of factors. They dried last summer during the drought and much of the grass cover remains dormant from the winter.

The red flag warning indicates “explosive fire growth potential,” should a grass fire begin. Open burning is being strongly discouraged.
