Healthy activities planned for Kidtoberfest

OSKALOOSA — There will be plenty for families to do at this year’s Kidtoberfest.

On Oct. 12, Mahaska County ISU Extension will host Kidtoberfest at Penn Central Mall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Natalie Ferguson-Spray, program coordinator at Mahaska County ISU Extension, said this year’s event will be different from past years. Due to Oskaloosa being involved with the Blue Zones Project, Ferguson-Spray said Kidtoberfest will be focused on health and wellness via the theme, “Get Up and Move.”

Children will be able to learn about dental health at a tooth fairy booth. They’ll also have the opportunity to get some exercise “sumo wrestling” at the National Guard booth. There will also be an opportunity to make healthy smoothies alongside area dieticians, said Ferguson-Spray.

That’s not all.

Ferguson-Spray noted that there will be an Iowa Public Television “story time,” as well as an appearance by Dizzy the Clown and a robotics team showcase.

In keeping with the healthy living theme, children will be able to earn tickets to redeem for things like Hula Hoops, jump ropes and bags of fruit, said Ferguson-Spray.

Of course, many of the booths that have been with Kidtoberfest since the beginning will come back this year, which marks the seventh year of the event.

Ferguson-Spray stressed that Kidtoberfest is a free, family event. She said one of the the goals of Kidtoberfest is to provide families with affordable ways to become healthier, as well as the benefits of staying with the “toolbox of ideas” related to being healthy.
