‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’ comes to Graceland University’s Shaw Center Dec. 7

CENTERVILLE — The Owen/Cox Dance Group of Kansas City will present “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” in a special Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 7 at Graceland University’s Shaw Center.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. performance in the Shaw Family Auditorium are $10 for adults and $5 for students. You can stop by the Shaw Center Atrium ticket office location, call (641) 784-5270, or purchase your tickets online at There is no reserve seating.

The single Graceland performance is expected to sell out quickly so plan to purchase your tickets early.

This family-friendly production highlights many traditional “Nutcracker” favorites like “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Waltz of the Snowflakes,” but you will experience contemporary mixes of music and choreography. “There are many new twists on this wonderfully traditional piece,” according to Jennifer Owen and Brad Cox, artistic directors and founders of the seven-year-old company. Students from the Kansas City-area Paseo Academy of the Performing Arts join the ensemble in presenting a familiar story that turns out to be not so familiar after all.

The production will feature a full dance company and the 16-piece “People’s Liberation Big Band” which Cox says “…breathes new life into a story we all know, authored by Ernst Hoffman in 1816.”  He adds, “Tchaikovsky’s magnificent music has shown itself to be remarkably sturdy, both inspiring and enduring jazz and progressive rock arrangements. This is the fourth season Owen and Cox have performed the production.

Take a look at the Owen/Cox website at to learn much more about this traditional-yet-experimental production. You can view brief videos of their “Nutcracker” production at the site.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"

A. I support the ordinance
B. I do not support the ordinance
C. Not sure
