UPDATED, 10 a.m.: Two transported by lifeflight following early morning accident

MOULTON — An accident west of Moulton caused two to be transported by Mercy Air Ambulance from the scene Saturday morning.

A press release from the Appanoose County Sheriff's Office says Crystal L. Duey, 22, of Independence, Mo., and Alvin E. Beal, 32, of Moulton, were injured in the single car accident.

The call of the accident came in around 3:17 a.m. Saturday morning. The accident was in the 28500 block of 543rd Street.

The two were inside of a 1997 Toyota passenger car that was traveling east bound on 543rd Street, the press release said. The vehicle left the north side of the roadway and entered a ditch. As the vehicle entered the ditch, the vehicle becomes air born, ejecting Duey and Beal from the vehicle.

Beal was found lying in a nearby ditch while Duey was found trapped under the vehicle.

Duey was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals via Mercy Air Helicopter in critical condition following extradition. Beal was transported by a second air helicopter in critical condition to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

First responders from the Centerville Police Department, Appanoose County Sheriff's Office, Moulton Fire/Ambulance, Mercy Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, Mercy Air Ambulance and Centerville Fire Department were also called to the scene.

The Toyota was considered a total loss. The Appanoose County Sheriff's Office and Iowa State Patrol are still investigating the accident.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall.
