One dead following early-morning house fire

CENTERVILLE — One person has died following an early morning house fire in Centerville. The fire occurred in the 700 block of South 19th St in Centerville.

The Appanoose County Medical Examiners Office has identified Mark A. Morelock, 46, of Centerville as the deceased.

The investigation is ongoing and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. A press release from the Centerville fire department stated no foul play is expected.

The fire department was called to the residence at approximately 12:55 a.m. Saturday, responding to a 911 call.

A press release stated bystanders believed the occupant was still in the residence. Firefighters made an aggressive attack on the fire then entered the home to search for the occupant. Firefighters were able to locate what appeared to be a deceased male victim in the bedroom of the residence.

The Centerville Fire Department was assisted at the scene by Mercy Medical Center EMS, the Centerville Police Department, the Appanoose County Medical Examiners Office and Alliant Energy.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
