Cochran places seventh at state

DES MOINES — Moravia's Briar Cochran left no doubt on the mats Saturday afternoon, recording a 19-3 technical fall to take seventh place at the state tournament.

Cochran wrestled St. Edmond, Fort Dodge's Ryan Szalat. He recorded the tech fall in 4:27. All three points recorded by Szalat were escape points.

This is the second straight year Cochran has placed at the state wrestling tournament. Last year, Cochran placed sixth at 106 pounds. This year's placing came at 113 pounds.

To start the tournament on Thursday, Cochran beat Jose Montes of West Sioux by a 18-2 technical fall.

Bedford's Jared Hensley claimed a 6-5 decision over Cochran to give the Moravia wrestler his first loss of the tournament and put Cochran into the consoaltion bracket.

Cochran would record a 44 second pin of Audubon's Kyle Juelsgaard. To end Friday, Cochran lost to Highland's Bryce West by a 2:50 fall.

Cochran was the only area wrestler to place at state. Centerville's Bradley Irwin and Wayne's Tate VanDyne also were at the state wrestling tournament this year but did not earn a spot on the podium.
