Chase ends in ditch south of town

CENTERVILLE — Authorities have one in custody following a chase that lasted just over three minutes in Centerville Saturday night.

The vehicle pursuit started shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday when an Appanoose County Sheriff's Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of Highway 2 and 5. The vehicle fled through the lights and officers initiated pursuit.

The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle went into a ditch near RK Auto Body on Highway J46, on the southern edge of Centerville at approximately 11:11 p.m. Saturday.

Scanner traffic indicated the suspect traveled west bound on Highway 2 before turning south bound on Main Street. The suspect wound up southbound on Drake Avenue before ending up on Highway J46 and into a ditch.

Scanner communications indicated an officer was injured, but an ambulance was not needed at the scene. A taser was deployed, according to scanner traffic, at the end of the pursuit.

The name of the arrested individual has not yet been released by authorities.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
