Update: Appanoose County attorney found dead in his apartment

CENTERVILLE — Centerville Police Chief Tom Demry confirmed Appanoose County Attorney Richard F. Scott was found dead in his Centerville apartment Friday at approximately 10:10 a.m.

Chief Demry said officers were called to do a welfare check.

A subsequent press release issued by the Appanoose County sheriff's office Friday afternoon states the welfare check was asked for "because Scott did not appear in his office at the Courthouse for court proceedings."

"The Centerville Police, Appanoose County Sheriff, and Appanoose County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an investigation and it has been determined Scott died of natural causes," states the press release.

Scott was 40 years of age.

Scott became county attorney in 2008 following the resignation of Robert Bozwell.
