Dash cam: One lifeflighted after high speed chase

EXLINE — Editor's note: Dash cam and other video from this pursuit are available below this story.

A high speed pursuit that began in southern Centerville ended near Exline with a wild single car accident Thursday night.

An Appanoose County Sheriff's Deputy and a Centerville Police Officer were in the area investigating a report of a possible drunk driver driving through yards and acting suspicious in the 1600 block of South 20th Street in Centerville.

A press release from the Appanoose County Sheriff's Office said the deputy and police officer attempted to stop a Blue 2002 Dodge truck near South 18th and Green Street.

The press release states the driver briefly pulled over on 18th Street but then fled southbound on Highway 5 reaching speeds of over 90 mph. The driver continued on Highway 5 until he turned east on Highway T30, towards Exline.

The driver then failed to complete a turn on Highway T30, and went off of the road near 230th Avenue and Highway T30. When the driver left the roadway, his truck hit an embankment and went airborne.

The press release identified the driver as Brandon L. Hudson, 45, of Iowa City. He was transported by Mercy Two from the scene to a Des Moines hospital.

Law enforcement continues to investigate and charges are pending against Hudson. His current condition is not known.

The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"

A. I support the ordinance
B. I do not support the ordinance
