July 19

1:55 p.m. An accident was reported at the railroad crossing on 135th Avenue. Donald Dean Smith, 68, of Centerville was driving a 2006 Chevrolet northbound on 135th Avenue when he failed to yield to a tie crane that was being operated on the tracks by Jared Byron Schmidt, 27, of New Ulm, Minn. The vehicle collided on the tracks. Both operators said they tried to stop, but were unable to. There were no injuries. Damage to the tie crane was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Smith’s vehicle was estimated at $3,500. Smith was cited for a safety threat at a railroad crossing.
