---- — MOULTON – The Moulton-Udell Community School District will offer a hands-on learning environment for its agriculture, math and science classes. Thanks to the support of local farmers and America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, M-U Community School District received a $10,000 grant to implement a greenhouse and nature walk for the education and enjoyment of students and community members. The greenhouse will provide a learning environment for students to study botanical life sciences and plant anatomy while collecting data and performing research. The nature walk will circle the baseball field, and will provide an area for community members to learn about the history and uses of native grasses, plants and flowers.

America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, offers farmers the chance to nominate a local public school district, which can then compete for a grant of up to $25,000 to enhance math and/or science education. More than 1,150 nominated school districts submitted applications. The Monsanto Fund will invest $2.3 million through America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education grants this year.

“This project brings the learning alive,” said Randy Alger, principal of M-U Community School District. “Students can take home what they learn and apply it. It’s an educational tool they can take into the future.”

A check presentation took place on Thursday, Sept. 26 during a M-U volleyball game. A Monsanto representative attended the ceremony to present the school district with the $10,000 grant. Also in attendance to celebrate were the farmers who nominated the school district and state government official, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Public Health director.

America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education launched nationally in 2012 and has grown to include 1,271 eligible counties in 39 states. Since its inception, the program has invested more than $4.8 million in rural school districts across the country.
